Holy Communion Garden Worship

August 15, 2021

12th Sunday after Pentecost

Before the service

We are now at the BC restart plan step 3. However, recently, Covid case counts continue to rise in British Columbia. So, our community continues to be cautious.

  • If you or anyone in your family feels sick stay home and get tested immediately.
  • Please continue to sit in your household groups. Please re-arrange chairs as necessary to social distance yourselves.
  • Masks are recommended in indoor public settings. If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask even outside, please do so.

Prelude 前奏

Officiant: Let us prepare our hearts to worship our God, with prelude.

Opening Word 招詞

Officiant司式者: Let us begin the service with the words of Scripture.

Psalm 111:1

Praise the LORD! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Confession & Absolution

Let us examine ourselves and confess our sins.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.

Priest

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in His great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to Him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Scripture Passages

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a] to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. Strangers will shepherd your flocks; foreigners will work your fields and vineyards. And you will be called priests of the Lord, you will be named ministers of our God.

Reader 朗読者: The Word of the Lord
People 会衆: Thanks be to God 主に感謝します。

Romans 5:1-5

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Reader 朗読者: The Word of the Lord
People 会衆: Thanks be to God 主に感謝します。

Homily 宣教 by Rev. Andre Korstanje

Nicene Creed

Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed.

All 一同:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Special Prayer 特別の祈り (modified from the Common Worship)

Thanksgiving prayer for the gift of a Child, Emika Korstanje

Emika was born last year on August 7th, 2020. Due to the absence of the priest last year and amid the pandemic, we were not able to give special prayer for the gift of a child as a community of faith. Emika just turned one year old last week and her grandparents are here with us today. Nate’s parents are here in-person and Hitomi’s parents are joining us online from Japan. This is God’s given opportunity to give special thanksgiving for the gift of a child, our precious Emika.

This celebration is not the same as Baptism, which is the sacrament of initiation into member-ship of the Church, the Body of Christ. This is a special prayer which provides an opportunity for parents and families to give thanks for the birth of a child and to pray for family life.

Priest

We are here today to give thanks for the child, with her family and friends, and to support her parents in their responsibilities with prayer and love. God became one of us in Jesus, and understands all that surrounds the arrival and upbringing of children. It is God’s purpose that children should know love within the stability of their home, grow in faith, and come at last to the eternal city where His love reigns supreme.

Priest司祭: The works of the Lord are great: 主の御業は偉大である。

All 一同: His mercy endures for ever.

Mary gave birth to a child and called Him Jesus:

All 一同: He will save His people from their sins.

He will be called the Prince of Peace: イエスは「平和の王」と呼ばれます。

All 一同: His kingdom will last for ever.

Priest司祭: Loving God, You hold all things in life and call us into your kingdom of peace;

help us to walk the path of your truth and fill our lives with gratitude and faith,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All 一同: Amen.

Thanksgiving and Blessing

Parents with the child and grandparents also stand at the front

Priest司祭: Do you receive this child as a gift from God?

Parents両親: We do.

Do you wish to give thanks to God and seek His blessing?

Parents両親: We do.

What name have you given this child?

Parents両親: Her name is Emika. We wanted our daughter to grow in her own unique way wherever God planted her, according to His design. So we named her using kanji (Chinese characters) for “blooming” and “flower”.

Priest司祭: God our Creator, we thank you for the wonder of new life and for the mystery of human love. We thank you that we are known to you by name and loved by you from all eternity. We thank you for Jesus Christ, who has opened to us the way of love.

We praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The priest lays hand on the child

Priest司祭: As Jesus took children in His arms and blessed them,

so now we ask God’s blessing on Emika.

Heavenly Father, we praise you for her birth; surround her with your blessing

that she may know your love, be protected from evil, and know your goodness

all her days.

All 一同: May she learn to love all that is true, grow in wisdom and strength and,

in due time, come through faith and baptism to the fullness of your grace;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The priest asks the grandparents and family members.

Priest司祭: Will you do all that you can to help and support Nathan and Hitomi in the bringing

up of Emika?

Grandparents祖父母: With the help of God, we will.

The priest asks the congregation.

Priest司祭: Will you do all that you can to help and support this family?

All 一同: With the help of God, we will.

Let us pray for the child’s parents: Hitomi and Nathan.

I will ask Nate’s parents to pray in English, Hitomi’s parents to pray in Japanese.

Nate’s parents:

May God the Father of all, bless the parents: Nathan and Hitomi,

and give them grace to love and care for their child.

May God give them wisdom, patience and faith, help them to provide for the child’s needs

and, by their example, reveal the love and truth that are in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Hitomi’s parents:

The parents pray:

Priest司祭: Now the parents of Emika will pray: 咲花ちゃんの両親が祈ります。

Parents両親: God our Creator, we thank you for the gift of this child; Emika,

entrusted to our care. May we be patient and understanding,

ready to guide and to forgive, so that through our love she may come to know

your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Priest司祭: Let us pray for blessing upon Emika’s entire family:

The love of the Lord Jesus

draw you to himself,

the power of the Lord Jesus

strengthen you in his service,

the joy of the Lord Jesus fill your hearts;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Blessing

The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen
